Howard
J. Schneider, MD, FACS

Dr
Schneider obtained his college degree at Hamilton College
and his Medical degree from the University of Rochester
in 1964. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at
North Western University and joined Dr Romon Castroviejo
in New York until 1973, partaking in pioneering work on
corneal transplantation. An assistant clinical professor
of ophthalmology at Mount Sinai, Dr Schneider has been
in private practice since 1973 when he founded the Fifth
Avenue Eye Associates.
Dr
Schneider has been involved in some of the significant advances
in ocular surgery, being the first to use nylon sutures in
ophthalmic surgery, a practice that is now considered standard
of care around the world. Among his other significant innovations
are the use of periosteum support in placement of keratoprosthesis
and vitrectomy to prevent retinal detachment and secondary
glaucoma.
Dr
Schneider has been a fellow of the American College of Surgeons,
the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American
Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is the also
the president of the Castroviejo Foundation, which is dedicated
to advancing ophthalmic education.
Dr
Schneider’s professional interests include comprehensive
adult and pediatric ophthalmology, corneal transplantation,
and the management of cataract, glaucoma and retinal disorders.
Dr
Schneider is married with 4 children and enjoys spending time
with his family and
grandchildren. He is an avid tennis player and an amateur photogropher.
